  • A masterpiece
    Friday, August 18, 2017 1:00 AM
We have a screech owl that has taken up residence in our trees. I was in the house and could hear this new noise outside the front door. It was quiet-then the air was pierced with this garbled skeeereech. A half a minute passed and it came again. And again. So I checked it out and there in the pine tree was this owl. When he let out his call it was like he was pumped up full of air and then blows a gasket and kinda pops up from his feet to his head and this skeeereech comes forth. It’s true. It is kinda creepy. But cool too.
  • Support the community cat project
    Friday, August 18, 2017 1:00 AM
My neighborhood has evolved. Today many neighbors have dogs, but 30 years ago there were many cats and few dogs besides mine.
  • Weed
    Wednesday, August 16, 2017 1:00 AM
Fifty years ago I was speculating with a college friend of mine about what we might do with our lives. He asserted that he wanted to spend his life bringing about the legalization of marijuana. I kidded him at the time because such an ambition seemed an absurd waste of his considerable talent and brains.
  • Tips for surviving a nuclear attack
    Tuesday, August 15, 2017 1:00 AM
President Donald Trump has vowed to meet more North Korea threats with "power the likes of which the world has never seen" and Kim Jong-un has responded with a plan for a nuke attack on the US island of Guam. Plans are being made for a horror scenario we must take seriously.

As the hot, dry Nevada summer fades into another hot, dry Nevada autumn, the Nevada Mining Association is faced with a serious challenge: selecting our safety awards winners. From a pool of hundreds of nominees, our Safety Committee carefully considers example after example of safety leadership in Nevada’s modern mining industry.
  • Happy days
    Tuesday, August 15, 2017 1:00 AM
So there I was driving down the road Saturday morning heading off for breakfast. That's when I heard it announced on the radio. Uncle Willie just came out with a new song. I refer to Willie Nelson as my uncle being that we are all part of the one big family of man. Anyhow what surprised me so much was that Willie may have stolen my favorite theme.
  • Tax Burdens Continue to Plague Family Farmers
    Saturday, August 12, 2017 1:00 AM
Today, 99 percent of all U.S. farms are family farms, accounting for 89 percent of U.S. food production, according to the Agriculture Department. These are impressive statistics for farms categorized as being operated by families – individuals, family partnerships or family corporations. The numbers speak to the character and motivation of America’s farmers and ranchers and the high-quality food, fiber and renewable fuels they provide. It is becoming more and more difficult, however, for family farms to remain in business.
  • Share during an eclipse
    Friday, August 11, 2017 1:00 AM
Do you know the story of Chicken Little? She ran around in the rain hollering that the sky is falling, the sky is falling. Oh what shall we all do if the sky is falling? More over what shall we do if say an eclipse is coming?
  • Dancing with fear
    Friday, August 11, 2017 1:00 AM
I knew there was a war on against cancer and, oh yeah, drugs, illiteracy, poverty, crime and, of course, terror, and that many arenas — sports, religion, business and politics, to name a few — are often portrayed as war without the body bags. But I was still surprised to read recently in the New York Times that we’ve opened up a fat front:
  • Who is minding the store?
    Friday, August 11, 2017 1:00 AM
Lately, when we tune in or read national political news, it’s virtually the same stuff every day. If you’re watching a left-leaning outlet like CNN or MSNBC, or reading the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today or HuffPost, it’s almost all about either Russia or some leak from the White House.
